A sleeper bed laid straight onto soil will sink unevenly within a couple of winters. We level and compact the ground, bed the base course properly, and where needed set the first sleeper into a shallow trench so the whole structure cannot shift.
Timber in constant contact with wet soil rots from the inside. We line the inside of every bed with a permeable membrane to keep soil off the wood, and add a drainage layer of rubble or gravel at the base so the bed never turns into a waterlogged trough over a Devon winter.
Sleepers are heavy, and a few nails will not hold them together for long. We fix each course to the next with timber connectors, threaded bar or rebated joints depending on the design, so the bed stays square and rigid rather than bowing outward under the weight of wet soil.
A planting plan is only useful if the plants suit the site. We choose species for your soil, aspect and the amount of attention you want to give them, favouring reliable performers that cope with North Devon weather rather than fashionable choices that fail in the first winter.

The workhorse of modern raised beds: clean, straight, uniform and easy to cut on site. Treated to Use Class 4 for direct ground contact, softwood sleepers give 15 years or more of service when properly lined and kept off wet soil. The most cost-effective option and the sensible choice for kitchen gardens and family plots around Barnstaple.
Genuine ex-network railway sleepers in jarrah or greenheart, dense tropical hardwoods that shrug off moisture and rot for 25 to 40 years. They carry a weathered, characterful look that suits older properties and rural Devon gardens. Heavier to handle and pricier to source, but the longest lasting option by some margin.
Fresh sawn English oak weathers to a soft silver-grey and lasts 20 to 30 years in contact with the ground, with no chemical treatment needed. Sleeper beds are priced per linear metre of walling plus the cost of any soil, lining, drainage and planting. As a rough guide, a straightforward single-skin raised bed built with new pressure-treated softwood sleepers starts around £90 to £140 per linear metre fitted, including the timber, fixings and a membrane lining. Reclaimed hardwood sleepers cost more because the material is heavier and harder to source, but they last longer and look the part in older Barnstaple properties.
